**If your just coming to our blog and haven't seen the post on my 1st excavation....you may want to read that one first. I gave some background information to help you better understand the sea turtle hatching process. Keep scrolling down until you see that post or click here.**
I went to my 2nd excavation this past Tuesday. I couldn't wait to go to this nest because I was told on Sunday that they were pretty sure I would get to see some turtles. I can't remember the exact number at this nest either but a couple days before...around 68 sea turtles hatched and on Monday....20 - something more hatched. On Tuesday, I ended up seeing 7 turtles leave the nest and walk to the ocean.
As I watched the first turtle take it's first few steps, I suddenly got tears in my eyes. It was sooo touching. They were so precious. Some moved faster than others and their little legs worked so fast but it's like their bodies barely moved. Most of them tried to go up the sand dunes along the path, but the volunteers steered them back to their path. Once it started getting dark, they used flashlights to guide them to the water.
Now, to the pictures....and this time I have videos. :)'
They had this display to give facts and show the size of the sea turtles.
Here's the picture of the first turtle!!!
This little guy was a star. It was like he was waddling down the red carpet. lol
The sky was so pretty that night.
Below: You can see a turtle at the bottom of the picture that just came out of the nest and you can also see volunteers at the very end of the path steering the turtles into the ocean.
After all the hatchlings made their way to the ocean, the project leader observed all the other eggs that did not hatch....at this point, I was able to get close enough to see the turtle nest.
{Below: Videos}
I took 11 videos altogether. I'm only posting a few....most of them were similar just of different turtles. I have to say....the videos are the best part. Hopefully, it'll make you feel like you were right there with me. ;)
I hope ya'll enjoyed this as much as I did. :)'
